Registration
The team is comprised of male and female players 10 to 45 years old who have mental or cognitive disabilities with the desire to play ice hockey. Individuals are strongly urged to have some skating ability, a reasonable level of fitness, and feel comfortable skating with the required hockey equipment.
Prospective players and parents are urged to come and observe a practice or game to understand our players' abilities and to understand what our program is about. We also can discuss an on-ice skating assessment during one of our practices. Our program has a wide range of skater abilities, but initial learn to skate programs are available locally.
Once a player accepts to play for the WNY Special Hockey program he/she are registered through the Disabled Section – Special Hockey of USA Hockey. A few items of player and parent information are required to register the players. Registration is performed on an annual basis. The hockey registration starts September 1 and ends the next year on August 31. First year registering players are not assessed a USA Hockey registration fee. Second year registration fees are $45. Team fees of $100 will still apply and be paid on an annual basis.
